Our Staff – Detroit
Founder and Owner
Liz is a long-time Detroiter who, after a decade in sales, decided to combine her love of animals and her hometown passion into a career. In 2005 she opened Canine to Five Detroit Dog Daycare in Midtown and she hasn’t looked back. Canine to Five is now recognized as a Detroit small business success story, and Liz emerged as a staunch and prominent advocate for Detroit’s resurgence. Firmly convinced that small businesses are the key to true revival, she co-founded Open City Detroit, a networking group designed to encourage entrepreneurship, and participates in many initiatives to foster a strong grassroots business community. Liz resides in a renovated Eastern Market storefront with her husband, Pat Deegan, as well as her two giant dogs, Bunny and Argon.
Melissa joined the Canine to Five team in November 2011. This is her first job working with animals, but she’s had all sorts her whole life, so it comes as second nature. When she’s not making sure that the daycare is running smoothly, and your dogs are safe and sound, she enjoys music, photography, road trips and hanging with her two cats, Sam & Owen. And, on certain Saturdays at the Masonic Temple, Melissa can also be founding cheering on The Detroit Pistoffs and the rest of the Detroit Derby Girls.
Steph has been at Canine to Five since February 2011 but she’s been working with dogs for over four years. She’s loved dogs ever since she was a little girl, so it won’t surprise you to hear that her favorite thing about this job is getting to work with every different breed, size and personality of dog. Steph is always interested in doing volunteer work, especially helping to find foster homes for animals (even if it’s her own home!). Steph lives in Canton with Peanut, a Shepherd/Greyhound/Retriever mix, and a guinea pig named Sammy.
Holly joined the Canine To Five grooming staff in May 2006. A graduate of the Academy of Animal Arts, she excels at both dog and cat grooming! She has a passion for animals in need, and often fosters strays. She is a Detroit resident and has two dogs, four cats and four tanks full of fish at home. Holly’s gentle way with the dogs makes her a great addition to the team.
Cullen joined our team in May of 2012, but he’s been working with animals for over 2 years. He has two dogs of his own: Birdie & Beowulf, along with two cats: Bosco & Beatrice. Cullen loves working with dogs, learning their different personalities, how each of them like to play, and what motivates them. When he’s not outside playing in our pools with your dog, Cullen enjoys hanging out with his friends, listening to music and being outdoors!
Nicole came to us in October of 2008. She lives in Detroit and works at Canine to Five for a very simple reason: she loves dogs and all their different personalities. When she was just 10 years old, she began volunteering for a variety of animal-focused organizations, from Companion Pet Rescue to H-CAT (Hamtramck Cat Assistance Team). Her mom used to manage the Royal Oak Animal Shelter, where Nicole gained tons of experience. She loves to go on road trips, get tattoos, play Halo 3 on Xbox, work on her reptile collection and shop — when she is not playing with your dog!
Christina has been working for Canine to Five since May 2011. She has a puggle named Vigo that she brings to work with her most days, and she loves working with dogs because it’s rewarding to have them respond and respect her as part of the pack. Outside of work, Christina loves to explore different cultures by traveling, trying new cuisines and photographing people & the places she goes. She enjoys pursuing her freelance photography career, cooking and staying active with Vigo.
Gillian has been working at Canine to Five since April 2013. She is a 20-year old, Midtown resident who pursuing degrees in Biology and Psychology from Wayne State University, in hopes of continuing her education in Genetic Counseling. While Gillian doesn’t have any pets of her own, she has grown up around all types of animals. Her grandparents own a kennel that raises and trains Basset Hounds. She also has experience with cats, rabbits, rats, and exotic guinea pigs. Gillian’s favorite part of working at Canine to Five is that the dogs can always put a smile on her face, whether they learn a new command she taught them or being happy to see her. Outside of work, Gillian can be found volunteering, running, cycling, exploring Detroit, and visiting family and friends!
Alex joined the Canine to Five staff in January of 2013. Alex loves working at Canine to Five because nothing beats working in the pack. The energy, love and respect that develops with each dog can’t be beat by any other job. She lives in Detroit and is studying sociology at Wayne State University. Alex has been a dog owner her whole life. Alex rescued her dog Sammy, a beagle-pit mix. When Alex isn’t working she can be found out hunting for new great books to read, playing with her dog, riding her bike around the city, or practicing yoga.
Once graduating from Northern Michigan University in 2012, Krista signed up with AmeriCorps serving at a foster home in the U.S. Virgin Islands followed by a non-profit on Detroit’s east side. She has since returned to Grosse Pointe Woods where she grew up. Krista joined the Canine to Five team—or pack—in November 2013 and couldn’t love it more. At four years old, Krista fell in love with pugs watching “The Adventures of Milo and Otis”, a friendship/adventure story featuring an orange tabby and the cutest pug. Ten years later, Krista finally convinced her parents to let her have a pug of her own! Now when she returns home from Canine to Five Krista is greeted by her senior pug, Eddie, her two cats (one an orange tabby), and her leopard tortoise, Sherman. Krista’s love for animals came as naturally as breathing and is definitely in her blood. Both of Krista’s grandparents were veterinarians, her grandmother being one of the first females ever to graduate from MSU’s veterinary school. Krista was raised with frequent trips to her grandparents’ farm, surrounded by a number of cats that is too embarrassing to admit. She’d say working at a dog daycare is helping to provide a canine/feline balance that has been lacking in her life at times. In addition to settling into her new position and Canine to Five, Krista is working on a series of children’s books featuring marine animal characters. Good movies, international foods, and hiking are three of Krista’s favorite things in life.
Shannon has been grooming dogs for 3 years prior to joining Canine to Five in November of 2013. Shannon says that her favorite part of grooming are the “puppy kisses”. Shannon enjoys the outdoors in her off time. You can find her camping, canoeing, and fishing regularly. Shannon currently lives in Taylor with her two Chocolate lab mixes; Moose and Fred Bear, her Yorki named Emme, and her Boston Terrier named Boston George.
Matt joined our Canine to Five staff in 2011 working alongside his sister, our morning supervisor Nicole. Matt has a deep love and admiration for dogs that started while working for an Animal Shelter for 2 years prior to joining our pack. The one thing that Matt truly enjoys about his position is creating a bond with all of our dogs. He loves the bond created between us and the dogs stating that once that bond is created, it never goes away. That bond is so strong with Matt that he would rather work with the pack than with people. When he isn’t looking after your dog you can find Matt enjoying good beer, mexican food, and biking around Detroit. Matt currently lives in Hamtramck with his American Bulldog-Boxer mix, Delilah.
Before joining the Canine To Five team in March 2014, Kameron was going to school for Fashion Design with a minor in Asian Studies. She lives on the West side of Detroit with her mom and sister where she enjoys reading, going to the movies and playing with her dog, Kuvo, a 5 year old brindle Pit mix. She has also played classical piano for 13 years and enjoys going to record stores and thrift stores, traveling, cooking and baking. Kameron has grown up with dogs and loves that she gets to learn
Norlan traveled through the United States for fun before joining the Canine To Five crew in March 2014. He enjoys reading and is interested in holistic health. Norlan lives near downtown Detroit with 3 cats. He developed a passion for working with animals while working at an animal shelter.
Chelsea joined the Canine To Five team in February 2014 after moving back to Ferndale (with her mother and dog, Scout) from Central Illinois. There she completed an internship working as a zoo keeper. Chelsea is no stranger to working with animals; she’s worked with various species including whales, primates, octopuses and exotic birds. In her down time, Chelsea enjoys going to shows, getting drinks, reading comedy or mystery books and pursuing various hobbies including true crime, sewing, and eating pizza. She is excited to a member of the pack at both Canine To Five locations.
Taylor, a Detroit native, started at Canine To Five in 2014. An avid accordion player, she was walking dogs prior to working at Canine To Five. When asked what she likes about working with dogs, she responded “What don’t I like? They’re all so different!” and she really likes getting to know them all. Taylor can be found at home with her two dogs Megatron, a Carin Terrier and Frankenstein, a Yorkie Pom mix. She also loves to walk with them.
Danielle Vander Hoff
Danielle grew up in St. Clair Shores and started at Canine To Five in 2014. She worked at various coffee shops for 7 years before finding us here at Canine To Five. She lives in the house she purchased with her boyfriend in 2012 located in St. Clair Shores. Her home crew includes 2 rescue dogs, Teddy an Aussie Mix and Louie a Pit Mix. Her dream job involves hanging out with dogs all day, so Canine To Five is ideal for her. In her free time she loves reading, hanging out with her pups and finding new bars and hotspots downtown to hangout in.
Cecelia resides in Dearborn and studies music at Wayne State. She enjoys working at Canine to Five because of its proximity to campus and the fun atmosphere. She has two dogs, Garfunkel and Lily, and two cats, Julius and Angelo.
Christina is a single mom without a whole lot of free time, although she finds minutes in the day for her son, Eliot; dog, Sven; cat, Boo; and bird, Mr. Pickles. She has experience at a variety of different grooming environments throughout metro Detroit, and she really enjoys the diversity and friendliness of the clientele and her co-workers at Canine to Five.
Adrian is a Detroiter in a band called Junk Food Junkies — the name’s derived from her ardent love for snacking! In her free time, she likes to picnic at Belle Isle, visit zoos, and get away for weekend camping trips with her dog, Lola. Adrian’s love of dogs is what led her to her job at Canine to Five. “I’d always heard awesome things about this place and am so happy to be a part of it,” she says.
